One panel is the simple answer. More than one has rules.
A single-panel kit is the easy path. It stays inside the limit a standard outlet and a certified plug-in inverter are built for, it doesn’t need a permit, and your utility generally has nothing to approve — and that holds just about everywhere in the country.
Two or more panels on one plug is where it gets particular. Certified plug-in inverters are rated to a set current per outlet, and running a second panel through a Y-cable pushes past it. That’s a real limit, not a formality — some states and utilities want a dedicated circuit, a meter, or a notification first.
So we do two things. Multi-panel kits are restricted at checkout in states where they aren’t straightforward — you’ll see it when you enter your shipping address. And if you want more power somewhere with rules, talk to our Texas team first and we’ll tell you honestly what your setup allows.
So is a plug-in kit legal where I live?
In most places the honest answer is “nothing bans it, but your utility has a say.” Nine states have passed laws that spell out exactly how plug-in solar works — and everywhere else, the ordinary rules for connecting anything to the grid still apply. That’s why we tell people to make one phone call to their utility first. One thing that’s true everywhere: using a kit off-grid — charging a battery or power station rather than back-feeding an outlet — isn’t restricted.
Why is one panel easier than two?
A certified plug-in inverter is rated to a fixed amount of current on a standard outlet. One panel sits comfortably under it. Run a second panel into the same plug through a Y-cable and you go past that rating — which is why a two-panel setup can need a dedicated circuit, a meter, or a heads-up to your utility depending on where you live. That isn’t a reason to avoid more power; it’s a reason to set it up the right way. What exactly do I ask my utility?
Three questions: (1) Do you allow a UL-certified plug-in solar device under 1,200W on a standard outlet? (2) Do you require any notification or interconnection paperwork for it? (3) Does it affect my meter or rate plan? Call us and we’ll walk through their answer with you.
Do I need a permit or an electrician?
In the states with plug-in solar laws, generally no — that’s the point of the legislation. Elsewhere it depends on your utility and local code. Maine is a good example of the nuance: up to 420W needs neither, but between 420W and 1,200W a licensed electrician is required.
I rent. Can I still do this?
Yes — nothing is drilled or bolted to the building, so there’s nothing permanent to undo when you leave. Colorado went further and specifically bars landlords and HOAs from blocking a system. Give your landlord a heads-up, then take it with you when you move.
What about my HOA?
Most setups sit well inside HOA rules because nothing is permanently attached and the panels sit low behind the house. Several states also limit how far an HOA can restrict solar devices. Read your guidelines first.
What will it actually run?
On a sunny day the $599 kit makes enough to cover a refrigerator plus everyday things like Wi-Fi, chargers and lights. Add the battery bundle and that power carries into the night. It won’t run central air conditioning.
Will it survive Texas weather?
The panels and inverter are rated for permanent outdoor use — sun, heat, rain and UV — and panels carry a 25-year manufacturer warranty. In severe-weather season a kit can be unhooked and stored in a few minutes.
